NDP 09 FUNPACKS
NDP 09’s theme of “Come Together - Reaching Out, Reaching Up” draws inspiration from Our Pledge. It is about our coming together as ‘one united people’, to reach out to all Singaporeans ‘regardless of race, language or religion’, and to reach up towards our shared hopes and aspirations articulated when we pledge to ‘achieve happiness, prosperity and progress for our nation.’ The Funpacks have always been a key highlight of any NDP. This year, the key considerations are focused on designing the bags that will appeal to all ages and genders. At the same time, we intend to use the bag as a means to reach out to the less fortunate under one of the five NDP 09’s key celebratory thrusts - Care.
DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
Our main design consideration was to have an NDP bag that would be embraced by people of all ages and genders so that the bag will be used and reused beyond NDP09. This year's bag is an in-house innovation, combining the ideas of both the popular Tote and Messenger bags and has the following features:
1. Functional - The bag is highly versatile. It can be carried in two ways, either a typical Messenger Bag or as a Tote bag by removing the flap and using the two straps inside. There are three small compartments inside the bag to allow smaller items to be neatly secured.
2. Fun - There are eight attractive colours. The bag covers can be easily removed and interchangeable for up to sixty-four colour combinations.
3. Fashionable - The bag is designed for people of different ages and genders. It is modern and trendy to meet the needs of different occasions.
FUNPACK ITEMS
Contained within the funpacks are three categories of items. Sustenance Items such as drinks, snacks and sweets will be provided for the spectators. Interactive items are items such as the Heart-shaped Lantern, Hand-shaped Drum and Face Tattoo. The Publications include items such as the programme booklet, magazine, discount coupons booklet, NDP DVD, ZoCard and ComChest donation leaflet.
CARE FOR THE SOCIETY
As the nation celebrates, we aim to do our part to raise greater awareness and funds to support the less fortunate in our society. For this purpose, we have initiated a fund raising activity and produced a special edition NDP 09 bag* as a reward for donors who contribute $15 to Community Chest (ComChest). These voluntary welfare organisations (VWOs) under ComChest, together with Institute of Mental Health and Yellow Ribbon Project will be taking part in the celebrations by packing some of this year's funpacks. Each funpack packed by these volunteers will be personalised with their greetings. In the funpacks, we will also include information of the various VWOs involved in the celebration to raise greater awareness.

CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
As organisers, we wish to support the global green efforts to achieve a greener funpack. In our design and production of the interactive items, emphasis was placed in reducing the plastic packaging involved. Other areas include reducing the use of plastic wrappers in publication items in the funpacks. We aim to deliver a NDP bag that is able to maintain its functionality and attractiveness so that it can be used and reused long after NDP 09 is over. In the area of recycling, we are using recycled materials to produce the Poncho in the funpacks. Lastly, we are working with a partner to recycle the interactive items.
