The NDP Express is shifting gears to reach top speed as we near completion of the preparation phase. Almost all of the Parade and Show participants have been recruited and organized into their respective segments. Some have even started their individual rehearsals. Recordings of many artists and choir groups have also commenced. In the background, our logistics and procurement teams have been working tirelessly with the respective sub-committees to deliver costumes, props, supplies, transport, administrative and logistic requirements ready for the rehearsals and parade. The infrastructure development at the floating platform and seating gallery had also reached feverish pitch with construction and renovation works going round the clock.
Our NDP 2008 logo has finally been endorsed. The logo depicts children reaching for the stars in unison. Like our chosen theme, “Celebrating the Singapore Spirit”, the logo has a celebratory and inspiring look and feel to it. It aptly captures our collective energy and determination to achieve excellence and success for the parade.
Once the component and combined rehearsals commence from May onwards, the pace of work will intensify. Information, decisions and actions will have to be delivered, discussed, decided and implemented in shorter time cycles. In the rush to get things done, miscommunications and misunderstandings could happen. We need to guard ourselves against such situations.
Preparing for NDP is akin to competing in the F1 Grand Prix. It requires a team of dedicated professionals coming together to ensure the driver and the car can operate at breakneck speed without crashing. Yet, it is not about driving recklessly without any strategy. Pit stops are part of the winning formula. Regular pit stops are needed to have the driver’s visor cleaned, tank topped up and tires changed. We too need our pit stops to make sure that our vision remains clear, our energy replenished and our directions assured. Only then we can be confident to move at fast speed and win.
At the beginning of this NDP journey, the EXCO members made a pledge to deliver a visually spectacular and emotionally engaging parade. We also wanted a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable experience for ourselves and all participants. It is timely to remember and reflect on our pledges and how we should operate to fulfill our promises to each other. I believe we can if we continue to keep focused on our collective vision for success, to maintain our communications and cooperation amongst ourselves and our stakeholders, and to commit ourselves to understanding to each others’ needs.
From the planners, participants and partners that I have interacted with, I have full confidence that this will indeed be the case. Their will and determination to succeed can be seen in their eyes. Their abilities and commitment to deliver can be seen and heard. Their warm and trust with each other can be felt and experienced. I am inspired, committed and ready. I am sure you are too!
