The Art of Perspectives - The National Day Parade 2008 Funpack

-by Alan Chow

Creativity, Inclusiveness and “Green”. These are the three main themes in which this year’s Funpack, Perspectives, is based upon. The Funpack was created as part of the DesignSingapore-NDP 08 Studio, organised by the NDP 08 EXCO Committee and the DesignSingapore Council. The design of the Funpack was conceptualised by Terence Woon, an Industrial at A*STAR SIMTech. Together with Very Special Arts Singapore Ltd, School of Arts Singapore and Tetra Pak, the National Day Parade 2008 Funpack became a reality.

The Creativity theme of the Funpack aims at a design that meets the objectives of being both interesting and useful. And the result is a brilliant and artistic design in tune with the National Day Parade theme of Celebrating the Singapore Spirit. The inclusiveness theme is reflected in the artwork of the Funpack which were created by students from Very Special Arts and School of the Arts. Their contribution to the artwork expresses the idea that everyone matters and plays a part. The artwork by the students is a collage of their perspectives of the Singapore Spirit based on their personal experiences. And lastly the “Green” theme introduces the element of being environmental friendly and practical. The Funpack is made from the highly recyclable Tetra Pak, a familiar packaging material.

If you are wondering what is the “Fun” in the Funpack this year, here is a sneak peek at the interactive items of the Funpack, more specifically the AIR Glove. The AIR Glove is designed by 5 students from Temasek Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Nanyang Polytechnic and the National University of Singapore.

The AIR Glove would allow the audiences to play a part in National Day Parade during specific segments of the show. While the audiences happily indulge themselves in “clapping” the AIR Glove, the effect of their actions would result in a magnificent sea of lights and sound that will engulf the seating gallery. With all these exciting features, the Funpack is definitely going to bring a whole new dimension to National Day Parade this year.
