NDP 2008 SOKA Rehearsals – Dynamism in Coordination

-by Kelvin Yang

“The cutting down was slow. We must cut it fast and move!” came the voice from the podium above. On the parade square below, everything was fully organised and orderly. Green flag in their right hand, orange flag in their left, the volunteers from the SSA (Singapore SOKA Association) showed youthful dynamism as they played out the choreographed steps, a prelude to what is to come at NDP 2008.

Says Audrey, a first-time trainer (one of the many dedicated instructors who motivate and train the participants): “It is something to look forward to, even though it is tiring.” For Wilson, a second-time trainer, it is “a good learning platform, both physically and mentally”, and also “a good challenge and opportunity that he looks forward to”.

Mr. Lim Heyu, the assistant choreographer, emphasises that there are no full-time SOKA members among those participating in NDP 2008 – all participants are volunteers or friends who have been roped in. Heyu, an OBS (Outward Bound School) instructor by day, feels that “social capital, in other words, people, is at the middle of the whole equation at SOKA.” He adds, “Our members matter the most to us, and while NDP is a good platform for people to know SOKA, we are also taking the opportunity to serve our members.”

Seeing the participants come together to the sound of “5, 6, 7, 8 and down!”, one could easily pretend for a moment that NDP 2008 had came early. Indeed, the bright lights and the effervescent spirit of the people struck a beautiful contrast against the dark sky that night. In their well-coordinated and choreographed moves one sensed a dynamic energy, suggesting that the SOKA performance at NDP 2008 will be one to remember.
