Masters of the Skies - The Red Lions Parachute Display Team

-by Alan Chow

The lions are up in the skies once again this year; the Red Lions that is. An all-time favourite, the Red Lions are all geared up to perform at the Marina Floating Platform for this year's National Day Parade. With the thousands of Singaporeans in eager anticipation of them, it is definitely a tough challenge to live up to expectations.

The SAF Red Lions Parachute Display Team was officially introduced in 1996 to create an identity for this remarkable group of parachutists. The team consists of 2 entities: the display jumpers - commandos who are freefall trained and have clocked a stipulated number of jumps; and the central nucleus - the “headquarters” of the Red Lions, responsible for the planning and administration of parachute activities.

The Red Lions have commented that this year they will increase the difficulty of the jump as they are more adept to the new environment. Besides expanding the number of jumpers to 12, they will also execute freefall display from an astonishing 10 000 feet. And as a final coup de grace, the Red Lions will be landing on the promenade instead of the floating platform. So be sure to catch the Red Lions in action at this year's National Day Parade!
