The Return of Provost
-by Alan Chow
“Pride, Discipline and Honour” These three words sum up the direction and guideline of the Singapore Armed Forces Military Police Command. Formed in 1966 at the old Beach Road Camp, the Provost unit started out with only one company, under the command of the 1st Singapore Infantry Brigade Headquarters. They expanded rapidly over the years and in 1971, the Singapore Armed Forces Military Police Command was officially formed and relocated to the Mowbray Camp.
The Singapore Armed Forces Military Police Command maintained a variety of roles since its formation. Besides its conventional roles of handling military crimes and enforcing discipline in the military, the Singapore Armed Forces Military Police Command has also begun performing ceremonial roles. In 1984, a 93-man unit was drawn from the Singapore Armed Forces Military Police Command to form the Silent Precision Drill Squad (SPDS). Training for years with the help of foreign instructors, the squad made its National Day Parade debut in 1986. And in 1988 at the National Stadium, they performed their first mass precision drill.
Having been absent in NDP 2007, the SPDS is expected to make its highly anticipated return to perform its mass precision drill. And this year, they will perform their mass precision drill for the very first time on the Floating Platform at Marina Bay. The SPDS is sure to impress the crowd with their dazzling stunts that have never failed to amaze through the years.
